“Time lapse” is a film technique whereby a camera is used to capture frames at specified intervals of time and the resultant footage is played at normal speed, thus giving the impression that time is moving very quickly. The following video consists of time lapse shots of San Francisco and the result is breath-taking footage:
Here’s my attempt at a time lapse video when I strapped my camera and tripod down to my passenger car seat with the seatbelt and drove to Mississauga from Waterloo:
That’s right. Camera. You don’t need to use a video camera or camcorder for this technique, since you could take individual photos and string them together to create a time lapse video. Quicktime Player allows for you to do this and here’s a tutorial describing how.
Lastly, here’s another time lapse video (also set to 8-bit music) by myself using this technique to capture the Arts frosh of 2009 creating a aerial human design:
Try it yourself and create some time lapse shots!

EDIT: Remember to leave your camera’s “Auto White-Balance” feature off as it will really throw the effect off as individually frames will have different coloration as the camera recorrects the white balances for each shot and look something like this:
Lesson? Turn off “Auto White-Balance” when filming time lapse videos!

So I was looking into some ways I could build a cheap dolly on a college student’s budget and this is what I found:
Never would have thought of using tennis balls, PVC pipes, and a bit of duct tape to make a dolly track for a tripod.
The test footage doesn’t look bad at all:
With the level of ease and price of the materials needed, this definitely seems like it’d be worth a shot.

Students, professors, and the mayor of KW share their visions of hope.

Each red and white bracelet is handmade by a cooperative of South African women. One woman can make 50 bracelets each day; earning her enough to pay for her children’s food and school fees for a month. Your donation for this bracelet supports the Masai for Africa Campaign and the Tsepong (A Place of Hope) Clinic in Lesotho, providing counselling, education, and treatment to patients. By donating to our campaign you are helping to alleviate poverty, educate children, and empower women to change their world.

Here’s a short film by local UW student Akriti Jain.
Be warned that the subject of the film is not for the feint of heart. There is uncomfortable subject matter and strong language.
Warnings aside, check it out. It’s definitely a unique and original film.

In 1976, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch captures a high-speed drive across the city of Paris with a mounted gyro-stabilized camera on the the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB. His friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, is at the wheel of the vehicle. No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.
The roar of the engine and the squeal of the tires can be described by the words: “damn sexy”.
